How to set a construction budget
So many Clients hire an Architect or designer to prepare drawings without really preparing a proper budget first.
So they are commissioning a design without even knowing whether they can afford the project in the first place….
If you are thinking of refurbishing your house, how much do you think it would cost and where are you getting those figures from?
I mean, where exactly are you getting your figures from? If you are getting figures from an Architect or a builder or a friend, where exactly are they getting their data from ?
Because when you start digging into costs, you will find that most people are relying on little more than hearsay.
Say you want to refurbish your house and covert your loft. You can ask several Architects and builders in your area to give you a quote for their design services and construction services and this may give you a very rough idea of cost.
But this is not good enough. A budget cost is like someone telling you they love you. Its great, it really is, but it means nothing without deeper roots and connections. If your budget has no roots in reality, in facts and figures, then its just a puff of smoke. It can change with the wind.
If you are serious about investing in a construction project you must really get your arms around the cost. If you fail to research and invest in cost planning then you will just be working to a budget that someone pulled out of the sky.
Think about it. If you are planning a wedding and your friends wedding cost £40k and you want a similar event, its fair to say your wedding will cost around £40k. That is not an unreasonable assumption. But then you surely would start putting the work in, researching venues, suppliers, getting quotes and detailing out the exact cost. Right?
Because if you don’t put the work in then deep down you innately understand that budget costs tend to ‘float’ and eventually blow up.
If you are not serious about investing in time and money into your budget then you are not serious about having a or sticking to a budget.
